Wars and Rumours of Wars

Be watchful, but do not let fear rule your heart.

"And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet."

Matthew 24:6 KJV

Introduction

Jesus told His disciples that they would hear of “wars and rumours of wars” and immediately added, “see that ye be not troubled” (Matthew 24:6, KJV). His words acknowledge conflict while warning against panic. He also states that “the end is not yet”, so wars alone cannot establish that the final events have begun.

In a Pre-Tribulation framework, wars and international instability are consistent with the troubled world Scripture describes before Christ’s return. They should prompt prayer, compassion and biblical attentiveness-not speculative claims that a particular conflict proves the Tribulation has started.

What Jesus actually said

Biblical text: Matthew 24:6-7 speaks of wars, rumours of wars, nation rising against nation and kingdom against kingdom.

Jesus does not identify a specific modern war or provide a date by which these events must occur. His instruction is to remain calm and recognise that conflict does not, by itself, mean the end has arrived. Luke 21:9 similarly warns against being terrified when these things are heard.

Global Conflict in the prophetic record

The Old Testament describes nations, kingdoms, judgement and future divine intervention. Daniel’s visions use the imagery of successive kingdoms, while Zechariah describes conflict surrounding Jerusalem. Revelation portrays conflict in its visions of judgement and the rise of hostile powers.

These passages do not all refer to the same event. Their historical setting, literary form and relationship to future prophecy must be considered carefully.

The first seal and the question of sequence

Biblical text: Revelation 6:3-4 depicts a rider associated with the removal of peace and conflict among people.

Many futurist interpreters connect the seals in Revelation with the end-times period. Within this approach, the first seals may be studied alongside Matthew 24:4-8. However, Scripture does not explicitly state that every war reported in history corresponds to a particular seal. The relationship between the opening of Revelation’s seals and the events of Matthew 24 is an interpretive question.

Respond without panic

Biblical text: "And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet." Jesus’ words in Matthew 24:6 remain important: the presence of conflict is not a reason for His followers to abandon hope or act out of fear.

Conflict brings real suffering to civilians, families and communities. Christian watchfulness must never become indifference to that suffering. Pray for peace, support those in need and evaluate claims about current events responsibly. Avoid assigning prophetic significance to every rumour, headline or political announcement.

The practical response to deception is to know the genuine message of Christ, remain connected to sound biblical teaching and refuse to let sensational claims replace the authority of God’s Word.

STRONG’S CONCORDANCE STUDY

Biblical text: "And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.  For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.  All these are the beginning of sorrows." Matthew 24:6-8 (to view the Strong's comments, click the  button on the menu bar)

  • πόλεμος - polemos (G4171): war, battle or conflict. Relevant to Matthew 24:6-7.
  • ἀκοή - akoē (G189): hearing, report or message; in context, reports of wars. Relevant to Matthew 24:6.
  • εἰρήνη - eirēnē (G1515): peace. Relevant to Revelation 6:4 and the wider biblical theme of peace.
  • λοίμος - oimos (G3061): a plague, the disease or figuratively a pest.

These are selected word-study entries, not occurrence counts. Also note the impact of these wars - not only are they taking place worldwide, but the consequences affect non-participants. Ethnic groups increase their attacks on each other, food shortages lead to famines, and diseases spread. And if these weren't enough, earthquakes happen on a global scale. Are these signs happening in our time? Are they happening in increased number, intensity and occurrences? YES!
